Dr. David Minkoff, founder of LifeWorks Wellness Center in Clearwater, Florida, is a physician whose career has been marked by controversy. While presenting himself as an alternative medicine pioneer, his history of disciplinary actions, lawsuits, and ties to Scientology have raised significant questions about his ethics, transparency, and overall patient safety.
Disciplinary Action in Lisa McPherson Case
In 2001, the Florida Board of Medicine suspended Dr. Minkoff’s license for one year and fined him $10,000. He was sanctioned for prescribing medications to Scientologist Lisa McPherson without proper evaluation.
The case remains one of the most controversial in Florida’s medical history, with Dr. Minkoff also paying a $100,000 wrongful death settlement. This incident continues to cast a long shadow on his medical credibility.
Whitney Mills Wrongful Death Lawsuit
In 2024, Dr. Minkoff was sued following the tragic suicide of Whitney Mills. The lawsuit alleges he misdiagnosed her with cancer and Lyme disease, subjecting her to expensive and unproven treatments.
Critics argue he failed to recognize her severe depression and neglected to refer her for psychiatric care. The case highlights the risks of misdiagnosis and inadequate oversight in his practice.
Promotion of Unproven Therapies
Dr. Minkoff’s clinic heavily promotes alternative treatments such as ozone therapy, chelation, and detox programs. These approaches are widely criticized as lacking solid scientific evidence.
Patients who seek conventional medical solutions may instead be offered costly experimental therapies, raising ethical concerns about both safety and effectiveness.
Close Ties to Scientology
Minkoff is a long-standing member of the Church of Scientology and linked with its outreach organizations. His involvement with Scientology has drawn scrutiny from critics and medical watchdogs alike.
Concerns persist that his religious affiliations may influence his approach to patient care, especially in cases where psychiatric treatment is downplayed or avoided.
Financial Exploitation Concerns
Through LifeWorks Wellness Center and his supplement brand BodyHealth, Dr. Minkoff markets high-priced therapies and products. Many of these offerings are viewed as unproven or unnecessary by mainstream medical professionals.
The heavy emphasis on alternative medicine and retail sales raises questions about whether patient welfare or profit is prioritized in his business model.
Conclusion
The controversies surrounding Dr. Minkoff — from state disciplinary sanctions and wrongful death lawsuits to reliance on questionable treatments and deep ties to Scientology — highlight serious risks for patients and ongoing reputational challenges. These issues underscore the urgent need for stricter accountability, transparency, and oversight in practices tied to alternative and high-cost medical care.

I hesitate to trust practitioners with repeated controversies in their career.
His name is permanently linked to the Lisa McPherson tragedy yet Dr. Minkoff pretends to be a victim of misunderstanding. No, he was disciplined by the Board of Medicine for a reason. Giving medical orders by phone without examination while someone dies? That’s the opposite of professional it’s lethal negligence.

His close ties to Scientology and reckless medical decisions make him a serious risk to patients. Took $30,000 from a friend for "alternative treatments" with zero results.
Paid Dr. David Minkoff over $20,000 for treatments that turned out to be worthless. Felt manipulated, deceived, and financially drained absolute scam.
